MEDECO® INTRODUCES ELECTRO-MECHANICAL PARKING METER LOCKING SYSTEM
Combines high security Medeco locks with electronic access control
SALEM, Va. (December 6, 2000) — Medeco has launched its Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System enabling cities to increase parking meter revenue through improved collection efficiency and key control, and maintaining greater accountability for route collections.
The Medeco Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System combines the mechanical advantages of Medeco’s patented locks with an electronic access control and route auditing system.
“One of the greatest sources of lost revenue for cities is through parking meter theft and fraud,“ said Michael Lumpkin, Industrial Security Electronics Product Manager. “The Medeco Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System gives cities the control they need to increase collections revenue through theft protection and increased route collection efficiency.”
Medeco projections show the increased revenue generated by the Medeco Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System will enable most cities to show a return on their investment within one year.
“Medeco Locks are not only high security locks, but are very user friendly,” said Noel Pinto, parking administrator, City of Oakland, Calif. “The ability of the Medeco Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System to track all lock activity and provide detailed activity reports is a priceless tool for management.”
The Medeco Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System consists of three components:
The first is the Meter SecureTM software that can be loaded onto almost any late model personal computer, enabling the route manager to electronically control the day and time collectors can access parking meters on their routes. The software allows the manager to schedule routes months in advance to be downloaded to the handheld computers. The software has been designed for maximum flexibility within any city’s needs.
The second is a handheld computer and key cord carried by the collector. With proper electronic authorization, this single unit can open any electro-mechanical parking meter lock in the route system, provided the lock has been loaded into the handheld computer for collection, eliminating cost and need for hundreds or even thousands of keys. The data collected by the unit is uploaded to the host computer and generates an audit trail printout identifying the collector, time, date and location of each collection. It also records attempts to access an unauthorized parking meter. The data cannot be changed or edited by the collector.
The third component is a sophisticated electro-mechanical lock that can only be opened with a properly cut mechanical key and an encrypted authorization from the handheld computer. Power from the handheld computer, not the meter, is used to open the lock. Medeco utilizes the sophisticated DES encryption system. The chances of someone arbitrarily opening a Medeco electro-mechanical lock are 1 in 72 trillion.
The mechanical portion of the Medeco Parking Meter Lock is UL 437 rated, having passed the most rigorous tests for drill, pick and punch resistance. The lock uses Medeco’s patented horizontal keyway. By using horizontal keyway technology the incidence of key breakage is nearly eliminated. This lock is virtually pull-proof and is punch resistant in excess of 8,300 pounds. This is equal to three Volkswagen Beetles sitting on top of the lock without access. For added security, Medeco has assigned a specific keyway to the parking meter industry that is exclusively factory-controlled.
Medeco is currently conducting field trials on its Electro-Mechanical Parking Meter Locking System in major cities throughout the United States.
