Detroit Metro Airport improves parking conditions with a new Vangaurd™ LED Display
Detroit, Michigan- Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), the world’s 5th busiest airport in terms of operations (landings and takeoffs), has recently made parking easier with the help of a new Vanguard™ LED variable message sign (VMS), designed and manufactured by Daktronics, Inc. of Brookings, South Dakota.
“We want to tell customers of lot closures before they reach that first traffic light as they come into the airport,” said Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara. “Instead of driving right up to a closed deck, customers will know that they have to turn left to use the Green or Red lots. We are trying to save them an unnecessary drive around the loop.” At 30 feet high, the two-sided Vanguard™ LED (light emitting diode) display greets motorists traveling in both directions of the airport’s entrance off I-94 and Rogell Drive. Airport visitors can look to the display for up-to-the-minute parking and traffic conditions and friendly greetings while entering the airport. Departing motorists can look to the display for a “thank-you-please drive safely” message.
The Vanguard™ LED display is just part of the $1.6 billion expansion program at DTW which includes a new 74-gate terminal and a 11,000 space parking deck. The new terminal is scheduled for completion in 2001.
“We now have about 12,000 parking spaces,” said Director of Airports David Katz. “We are doing all we can to try and make the Metro Airport of today as convenient and efficient as possible - until the end of 2001 when our new state-of-the-art Midfield Terminal is complete and our capacity challenges are greatly diminished.”
Daktronics Vanguard™ LED variable message sign (VMS) systems combine low power and low maintenance making them one of the most effective VMS technologies in the industry. Vanguard™ displays utilize high output amber LED technology which provides superior visibility in all weather conditions. Programming is easy and powerful with Windows®-based Vanguard™ central software, designed by Daktronics engineers.
