As strange as it seems cellular payments are around for at least 6-7 years and they are not getting too much success for a simple reason , the air time (SMS or any other method ) can cost as much or more as the parking fees . As a result for short parking sessions the transaction cost is way too high . If you calculate the cost of using cellular parking for a frequent user who makes several parking sessions a day you will find that it can add hundreds of dollars a year .

On the other hand for someone parking once or twice a week it might not be worthwhile to make the invesment in an in car meter and he can pay one or two dollars more for the convenience . Contrary to what you say in cities using both technologies the number of cellular parking users is not higher than in car meters users but on the other hand the NET REVENUES of the city from the in car meters users are probabely 50-100% higher !
